He Missed Sharks

The Phoenix Fishing Supplies charter aboard Qualifier 105 arrived at Point Loma Sportfishing September 17 after five days with skipper Brian Sims.

“A great group,” said Sims. “They fished hard, and while the tuna fishing was tough, we had outstanding yellowtail fishing.”

Tuna from Guadalupe Island swept the jackpot spots. The first three were flylined baitfish. A larger but ineligible tuna caught on the kite took honorable mention.

Bob Douglas of Rancho Palos Verdes won first place for a 44.2-pound tuna. He said he bagged that specimen with a sardine on a 6/0 Eagle Claw circle hook, 50-pound P-Line backed with 80-pound Spectra on a T 16 Shimano reel and a Calstar 665H rod.

“Well, I missed the sharks,” he noted when he was congratulated on the win.

Paul Everts of Escondido was second for a 41.7-pounder, and Anthony Ybanez of Phoenix, AZ won third place for a 38.1-pound yellowfin. Honorable mention went to Scott Langlois of Alta Loma, for his kite-caught 78-pound Guadalupe yellowfin.
