ORDER CHRISTMAS GIFTS HERE

There’s just enough time to take advantage of our Christmas offer! From now until January 1, if you buy a copy of At The Rail (hard or soft cover), you’ll get a free copy of Bill Roecker’s 2012 Sportfishing Calendar. What about DVDs? Okay, we’ll sweeten our offer: buy two or more DVDs and we’ll add a Calendar to that purchase as well. Now you can enjoy your Christmas with the products that serve you so well all year, and maybe get a little something for your best fishing buddy, too!

At The Rail: Long Range Fishing

What's Long Range Fishing? Take a look inside and you see why anglers come to the pinnacle of sport fishing: to catch tuna that weigh more than the anglers hanging on to the rod and reel. Yellowfin move with the speed of a cheetah and the power of a tractor with a jet engine, and they never give up. Ever been pulled to your knees by a fish? They used to call it "praying to the tuna god." And what are wahoo? Well, they're sweet eating and faster than a tuna, and they can bite through an oar, or a 100-pound steel leader. Take a look at this new book to learn all about it, read the stories told by the skippers and anglers themselves, and see knock-out color photos!

The heftiest, best-illustrated book on long range fishing ever printed is the perfect Holiday gift for your fishing friends. It’s a big, coffee-table volume of 208 pages with high-quality printing and paper, featuring color on every page. What’s inside? The best bites ever seen, the closest calls, oddest events, the most gratifying results and heartbreaking losses are in this great new book, in hardbound and soft covers.

At The Rail is about fishing for four tuna species; especially giant, record-breaking yellowfin tuna, and also includes plenty of angling for wahoo, dorado, yellowtail and other species. The new book is stuffed with exciting stories from exotic fishing hotspots, told by skippers and anglers, with the sport’s history, greatest achievements, insider info and startling, wonderful color pictures by top fishing photographers. Inside are original maps and professional illustrations with much greater fishing lore than ever seen before.

Season’s Second Supercow

Posted by admin  Published in General
“We arrived yesterday around 0400,” said the report from Intrepid December 11, “in time to catch some big baits to use during our first day here in the "zone.” Fishing was a little tough to start out, but after searching around we found a nice spot of fish and picked away at the 100 to 150-pound class Tuna all afternoon. Big fish honors of the day however, go to David Berutich who landed a new personal best and fish of a lifetime with a 310 lb. Super Cow. Dave Caught the fish with an Avet 50 W, 130-pound Tuff Line Hollow Spectra with a 130-pound Izorline topshot and a 10/0 Mustad hook matched with a Super Seeker 6364 XXXXH rod with a flying fish for bait. A big fish and new personal best have also come to Gary Arndt with his first Cow Tuna coming in this morning (our second day here) at 210 pounds and another big boy to Cephus Daniels. At the time of this report 0800 we have boated 36 Tuna anywhere from 40 to 215 pounds, with gray light being a very busy time for us. We have another four days here at the island and hope to keep it rolling. Pictured with the supercow is Crewman Scott Shurko, Capt. Kevin Osborne and angler David Berutich.”

Cedros Yellows

"The overnight stay at Cedros paid off well with great yellowtail fishing all morning," Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates reported December 12. "Decent size fish with the action that was perfect for the first day of fishing. Yo-yo jigging and flyline with good surface action made for a classic morning. Things died after lunch and we pointed it south for the Ridge. We will be there first light and spend the day targeting action based fishing before we head down to the Lower Banks.

"Weather is good and looks good for a few days. It will be nice to get into some warmer weather."

Good Start

The American Angler’s office offered this report December 11: “The boat called in to report their first day of fishing (the satellite is not cooperating this evening). The guys had 30-plus fish of better grade tuna today that ranged from 90 to 185 pounds and they had beautiful weather. Nice way to start the trip!”

Ride’s End

“Tomorrow morning the eternal boat ride ends,” noted the report from Royal Polaris December 10, “and fishing begins. To say we are anxious and ready is an obvious understatement. As great as the weather has been, it's even better today and for the first time a lot of the shirts have come off and it's not too hard to work up a sweat. There's really not too much to add. This morning and early afternoon there was chaotic activity as every one had lots of last minute things to do, but the crescendo has now been reached and it's mostly time for contemplation some of which is in the form of afternoon naps. Tune in tomorrow and see if the action plays out as scripted.”

Deuces Get In The Game

“We got in the game following a quick adjustment for conditions,” reported Royal Star December 11, “leading off with two mid-deuces and almost twenty mid-rangers from 110 to 160 pounds, in addition to a number of "nuisance" 30 to 60-pounders. This was from our first drift! Afterward the action slowed and aside from one fairly good afternoon hit we scratched our way along adding slowly to the morning tally.

“For now we are mighty content with a good start, and a set up that appears to offer plenty in the way of quality and quantity. But, this definitely does not feel like a lock, stock, and barrel guarantee. We are going to have to work for them. Fortunately this is our specialty. As good of a sea state as one could ask for compliments the effort and will continue a few more days. We are presently gathering steam for continuing success we hope to produce. In light of the fact that the Master Toussaint will be taking the helm tomorrow I'm feeling pretty confidant of our odds. I was the opener, going easy on the boys to warm them up; now it is straight business. Everyone who has fished with Randy knows exactly what I mean. And, I mean it in a good way; the man has my utmost respect - what a fisherman.

“Photos today feature two near-legends themselves: southland anglers Todd Phillips and Mike Neal. Todd is one of the finest, most capable anglers among us, and Mike is an exceptional angler in his own right whose action silhouette graces the cover of Bill Roecker's 'At the Rail' book about long range fishing. Both these fantastic anglers started off on the right foot to say the least, landing their first fish of the voyage at 242 and 241.6 pounds respectively. What a beginning! And, what a fine job both men did of handling their gear and making the opportunity count!”

At The Rail In 40,000 B.C.

Thanks to sponsor Jerry Brown of Line One Spectra, we got this news story: The San Francisco Chronicle’s SFGate.com ran an article November 24 by Alicia Chang, an AP science writer, relating the discovery of tuna bones and other deep-water fish in a cave on East Timor. Dating techniques used by a researcher from the Australian National University confirmed the remains to be 42,000 years old and the earliest known evidence of ocean fishing.

The article said researchers “…also unearthed fragment of fish hook made out of bone from the same East Timor site including one that dated to between 16,000 and 23,000 years ago.”
