“Today we spent about 6 hours in an area that has been producing good numbers of Yellowfin and Bluefin,” noted the report from Intrepid August 29. “The fishing has slowed from what it has been, but we were fortunate with the size of what we caught. Our Bluefin were in the 30 to 45-pound class and we also had a stop on Yellowfin up to 30 pounds. We left the area at lunch time and started our run South with a kelp patty dishing out a couple of nice Dorado as well as releasing about 30 Yellowtail on our way. Tomorrow will be spent fishing our way South toward the Ridge.”The Payoff
“With all the scratch fishing and tough weather that we've been having,” said the report from American Angler August 29, “we knew sooner or later that there would be payback. We had steady fishing all morning with one to six fish hooked at all times, never enduring a moment with no hook ups. After the life went away around lunchtime, we went on a three-hour hunt around the yellowtail zone and it paid off with some good biting fish in the afternoon. There is no need to say more about the flat weather and good fishing as those of you at home are probably already green with envy. Yesterday's hot dog was veteran angler Big Daddy Bill Shubin with four big bluefin out of the last stop and today's hot stick was first timer Morris Beliakoff's son-in-law, Kevin Uraine, as he quickly mastered the art of yo-yoing a jig. We have room on a 1.5 day departing Sun 9/18 and a 2.5 day departing 9/20 - call the office at (619) 223-5414.”
Brownies Biting, Skinnies, Too
Excel skipper Justin Fleck called in August 29 with his report from the Rocks: “We got here a couple of hours before daylight we looked around and really didn't see much then we switched around and started hooking a few tuna. Just as advertised, the sharks were a nuisance for us. It seemed like the tuna wanted to bite a little bit but it was a shame that the sharks got most of what we hooked. We did manage to land 16 tuna up to 65 lbs. Something interesting is that we got the first real sign of Wahoo that we have had all year. We ended up getting 16 skin and they are really nice ones the traditional early sized Wahoo, 35 to 40-pounders. We had a decent shot at them, I think we hooked 30 of them or more to get those 16. They were zooming around the boat biting off people's jigs.”
Blast On The Indy
“We have spent the last two days having a blast,” said the report from Independence August 29. “Fishing has been sensational to say the least, the yellowtail put on a nice show for us at Cedros and most of the yellows were 15 to 25 pounds, they bit jigs really well along with the bait. The surface Iron was the hot ticket for the boys in the bow! The afternoon gave us very good Yellowfin tuna and Dorado fishing, in the 14 to 28-pound class. It’s dinnertime and we're beat.”
Accurate Trip Off & Running
“It was a busy morning here,” said the Qualifier 105’s report for August 29. “We started to look for kelps and it was our first try that produced. There were Dorado thick on this kelp and we put the wood to them. They were mostly 12 to 15 pounds and a few were 20 plus. Jack from Accurate had a prize for the biggest dodo landed today. The winner was Gene Mckenna with a 27-pound bull. It was a nice fish and we were happy to see him win the prize of an Aftco fighting belt. (Mike, you should have made the trip, you big dummy!) Anyway, tomorrow it will be yellowtail as our target species. We have had good fishing down here the last few trips and hope for a repeat. Our weather is great and the entire group is getting along great and having a blast.”
Royal Polaris Report 8-29-11“Today our weather was overcast, with calm seas. Our morning started out with a bang. We had limit style fishing on Bluefin, with a good showing on Yellowfin. Most of the Bluefin were in the 15 to 18 pound range, with a few going over 20 pounds. We also caught a few Dorado. We will give this another try tomorrow, before making a move. We are putting the Shimano gear to the test, and so far things are looking good. The Wax-Wing was the top lure today on the Bluefin, with many of the larger one coming on it.”
Searcher Report 8-28-11“Well, another great day of tuna fishing! We found a school early that wanted to bite. Everyone had enough tuna so we passed the school over to another boat and they had some fun catching tuna as well. We went into the northeast in the warm water looking for a kelp paddie with hopes of few dorado. We found a good size kelp and we caught eight dorado, realeased a bunch of small yellowtail and caught a few more tuna. We have close to limits of bluefin tuna and quite a few yellowfin as well. This trip was a huge success with great weather and good fishing. Can’t wait to get back down there in 2 days.”
First Day Out
“We had an excellent first day,” wrote Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates August 29, “with wide open Bluefin and yellowfin tuna. What a great way to get started. The weather was perfect and now we are heading down to Cedros for hopefully some yellowtail action. We had a great raffle yesterday and Larry Brown and the passengers came up with 1600 dollars for donations. All items were raffled and appreciated.”
