Accurate Trip Returns

Posted by admin  Published in General
Brian Kiyohara docked American Angler at Pt. Loma Sportfishing January 18 following a 12-day Accurate voyage with 26 anglers and Gary Teraoka as chartermaster.

“We had great fishing,” said skipper Kiyohara. “We had a fine catch of tuna and yellowtail, along with some wahoo.”

He noted the water at the Hurricane Bank was 77 degrees, and 63 at Cedros Island.

Chartermaster Teraoka brought some 40 rods and reels aboard from Accurate and Calstar. He said, “We went to Clarion Island first for a day, and then out to the Hurricane for two days, and we spent a day at Cedros fishing yellowtail."

Yellowtail fishing was better than expected, said jigmaker Matt Salas, who commented that most of the yellows came on the yoyo iron.

“I got three wahoo on 6X Jr. jigs down south,” he remembered. “They seemed to like the Tar Baby best. I also got bit off a few times.”

Ed Morrison of Santa Cruz won first place for a 209-pound tuna. He told dock reporter Bill Roecker he got it with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Owner Duper Mutu hook on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon, tied to 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.

“He fought me for 40 minutes,” said Morrison, “and he took me around the boat three times. He came up on the bow.”

David Claverie of El Centro won second place for a 206-pound yellowfin tuna. It bit a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Mustad Demon hook. He said he used 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Izorline spectra, an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 765 XXH rod.

“My best fish and my first cow,” said Claverie. “It was a 40-minute fight.”

Tom Mato of Pico Rivera won third place for a 189-pound yellowfin tuna.
