Best Bruiser Barely Past Port

Posted by admin  Published in General
“The big bluefin I tape-estimated at 155 pounds came in on the scales at Fisherman’s Landing today at 184 pounds,” Excel skipper Justin Fleck told Bill Roecker August 7. The giant was caught very close to San Diego.

“It was caught by Gary Ohearn, who didn’t win the jackpot for it because he had to have a little help with it. He caught it on 40-pound line, a Seeker rod and an Avet reel. It was a sardine fish, on a 3/0 Hoodlum hook.”

Fleck’s report for August 6 said, "We had a good day yesterday at the local Bluefin grounds, 50 to 60 miles from home. We had a drift right out of the gate for 80 of those fish. Most of the fish were 35 to 50 lbs., a couple 65 and 70's mixed in. To top it off at the end we hooked a big one that we fought for 2 hours with 40-pound test. We ended up getting it, it was a 184-pound Bluefin caught at 50 miles.

“We went back and got another 40 so we ended up with about 120 Bluefin yesterday. The weather was a lot nicer than we expected. We see a very good sign of fish on the local grounds we expect it to be good for a while. And the grade of fish is phenomenal for being that close.”

Covering Water

“Today we covered lots and lots of water in search of some kind of tuna to catch,” said Independence’s report for August 6. “Bottom of the ninth, two outs, and we hit one out of the park. We got on a spot of yellowfin tuna that really wanted it. When all was said and done we put 78 of these beauties in the RSW well, chilling down. Nice grade 18 to 39-pound fish. The weather is still good, but could be in for a change. We are going to check out an island for tomorrow.”

Yellowtail

Royal Polaris reported August 6: “We started off our day looking for kelps while making our way towards Benitos Island. We stopped on a few and caught a handful of nice dorado. We also got a couple of jig strikes on yellowfin tuna. We made it to Benitos late in the afternoon and were able to boat 64 yellowtail before dark most of which went 18 to 30 pounds. With good sign at the island we are hoping for a good day tomorrow.”

Searcher Action

“We've had good action on nice grade yellowtail this morning,” reported Searcher August 6. “Most of the fish are in the 18 to 20-pound range with a few bigger and a few smaller. We also landed five white sea bass and one halibut about 30 pounds. Hoping we can keep this up for awhile.”
