Moving North

Posted by admin  Published in General
All those tropicals hanging around the San Benitos Islands and Cedros may have flicked their tails in this direction. At least a half-dozen wahoo have already been caught in local waters over the past few days, and yellowfin tuna, when they go on the bite, have been thicker than flies, with anglers commenting on the water “turning brown” off the stern of chumming boats. Can it get better? You bet.

Yellowtail Mode

Excel Captain Mike Ramirez called his office with an update from the Big Al's Charter:

“We spent the last couple days fishing for Yellowfin Tuna (15 to 30 pounds) and Wahoo. We have moved to the coast and will focus the next couple days on Yellowtail.”

Intrepid’s office said the Intrepid checked in September 23 with an update from the Ridge. Yesterday we had good fishing for Yellowfin Tuna (15 to 40 pounds) mostly on the drift. We also had a pick on the Wahoo. Today the fishing is for Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail, Grouper and Wahoo. The Intrepid has spots during the Fall 10-Day Season. Call Steve at the Intrepid Office.”

Hung Around

“We stayed a little late,” said the report from Red Rooster III September 24, “and used up our last bait on a nice finisher with Yellowtail. We ended just after lunch with 73 nice grade yellowtail and are starting home.

“It's always nice to end with a bang! Guys are busy breaking down the gear and it looks like 8:30 for an ETA. See you then.”

Chipping Away

“Good sign of tuna but challenging to get a bite today,” said the report from Royal Star September 24.

“We did manage to boat 65 with a fair mix of 30-pounders and six nice wahoo. Make sure you bring the wahoo gear on all the upcoming trips as we have had a shot at them just about every day. We will be targeting yellows tomorrow to finish the trip. Bobby Seitz is in today's shot with a 55-pound skin.”

Patience

“We are patiently waiting for some tuna to show up here today,” noted the Searcher’s report September 24.

“We see signs of them but they are not in the biting mode yet. We hope to have some action this afternoon on yellowfin tuna like the one Terry Wade landed just minutes ago.”

The next day’s report said, “We started our day by catching a few fish after sunrise. Dan Carrier from Irvine landed a 25-pound yellowtail with 30-pound line and a live bait.”

Collecting

Shogun left September 21 for a 10-day Monterey Bay Aquarium Collection trip.
